When you get HD, you'll quickly notice how much screen real estate is wasted because TV providers don't want to alienate their standard definition (non-widescreen) viewers. All the screen graphics are stuffed into the old 4:3 aspect ratio and the extra widescreen areas of your TV are just filled with the rest of the video frame.

Kudos to ESPN for being the first telecast I've seen to do separate screen graphics for HD and standard def. It's difficult to see in the camera phone image, but on the far right side of the screen they show what is coming up next on Sportscenter. If this was translated straight to standard definition, that info would be completely cut off. But instead, ESPN does completely different graphics. They shrink the video feed and put the upcoming topics along the right side of the screen.

I don't know if that makes sense... but if you have an HD TV, flip on both the HD version and the standard def version to see the difference.

Unfortunately, this is good work is overshadowed by Steven A. Smith interviewing NASCAR people. That guy is a moron even when he talks about basketball. When he started talking about NASCAR I wanted to stick hot pokers in my eyes.

But soft! What light through yonder window breaks. It's my new office! Yesterday I moved out of my interior office into a window office with Liam. It's awesome to be able to see the sun again and I'm sure I'll learn a lot sitting with Liam. I'm actually facing away from the window, but a quick trip to Ikea for a mirror will solve that problem.

[UPDATE] D'oh! I had the perfect comic to post with this and then forgot to add it in...
