Fantasy Football – Week 14

The Seahawks defense looked awesome for a third week in a row! The offense wasn’t stellar but in the second half, they finally got the better of the Eagles strong defense and started pushing them around. I’m feeling much better about the playoff picture than I was 5 weeks ago, especially with the unbelievable loss by the 49ers to the hapless Raiders. While the Raiders are definitely rejoicing in their victory, they probably cost themselves the first draft pick. (Though if you’ve read Scorecasting you know that early draft picks are way overrated.)

We finished the regular season with our highest average team score: 141.29! Both Austin and I set our own personal bests and we both could have topped 200 with an optimal roster. Congrats to Luke for starting a perfect roster.

The playoff picture is now set. Defending league champion, Logan, will not be repeating as he lost his game and fell to fifth place. Even if he had won he would have lost out on total points for the tiebreaker. After a season of very close standings, things finally spread out a bit at the end.

The power rankings are holding pretty steady for a second week in a row. The only change is that Logan and Jim swapped places. These are also the four teams that are in the playoffs. I’m sticking with my prediction that Austin is going to take it all. He’s averaging over 150 in the last four games! Unfortunately for me, I go up against him first while Tim takes on Jim. I think Austin and Jim will win round one and then Austin beats Jim in a central Indiana championship battle royale. But hey, as the Raiders will tell you, you never know what’s going to happen until you play the game.

Fantasy Football – Week 13

Seahawks! Two excellent defensive games in a row with enough offense to win. I’ll take it. The road doesn’t get any easier but these last two wins were critical and they now control their own destiny. This weekend they will be on the road in Philly. I’ve been making big points off the Philly defense this season so we’ll see how the “meh” Seahawks offense stacks up.

In our league, we had another very high-scoring week. Tim has locked in a playoff spot, but everything else is up for grabs. You couldn’t script this final week much better. There are four teams who basically can win and make it into the playoffs but are in jeopardy if they lose and none of them play against each other. Every game in our league is critical for determining the playoffs! Austin, Jim, Logan and I all still have a pretty equal chance to grab the final three spots. Since none of us play each other, there are a lot of possibilities. Here’s how it works out:

  • Ben – Win and I’m in. Lose and I need one of the other guys to lose OR I need to have more total points than one of them (unlikely but possible)
  • Austin, Jim and Logan – If only two of these guys win, those two will make it. If all three win, one of them needs me to lose so they all make it if they have more points than me. Everyone except Logan is pretty much a lock for winning the total points tiebreaker.

Austin and Jim look pretty good because of their high point totals. The last playoff spot is definitely up for grabs between Logan and me, and I have a slight edge since I don’t need the tiebreaker if I win this week. But then again, I have a much tougher game ahead of me than Logan does. It’s too close to call… just the way I like it!

The power rankings keep Austin on top while Jim and I swapped places between second and fifth. This aligns with what I’ve been saying for weeks: watch out for Austin. He started slow but since week 5 he has been averaging more than 10 points more than anyone else in the league! This week he could have had over 180 points if he started his optimal roster.

  1. Austin (–)
  2. Ben ( 3)
  3. Logan  (–)
  4. Tim (–)

Fantasy Football – Week 12

The Seahawks defense finally looked good for a solid 60 minutes. And look what happened… a victory against a tough opponent! The secondary is back and healthy and it’s a good start to a grueling end to their season. Just making the playoffs is going to take some luck so let’s start with that goal and see where they go.

We had another high scoring week in our league (third highest of the season). Tim lost again but remains on top which speaks to his big league. You’ll see that he takes a big hit in the power rankings though. Only two weeks left to settle the playoff spots and nobody has clinched one yet. I’d say that Tim and Jim are looking pretty solid in their chances for a playoff spot though. I think Andy and Dad (and maybe Luke) are pretty much eliminated, but the rest of us will have to duke it out for the final two spots. If I had to bet money, I’d take these four guys that are in the Week 12 Power Rankings:

  1. Austin ( 4)
  2. Jim (–)
  3. Logan  (–)
  4. Tim ( 3)

2010: Luke
2011: Andy
2012: Ben
2013: Logan

Fantasy Football – Week 11

The Seahawks played a reasonably good game last week but couldn’t evade defeat. They had two big fourth down failures that really put the nails in the coffin. The schedule doesn’t get any easier for them coming up.

In our league, we cleaned up some active streaks. Logan’s 4 game winning streak ended and Luke’s 4 game losing streak ended. After having one of our highest average total scores last week, this week we almost had our lowest average total score. It’s interesting how often the entire league goes up or down together.

Tim retained the top spot in the power rankings despite his loss and the power rankings now match the top four spots in our league. Three more weeks will determine the top four spots that will advance to the playoffs!

  1. Tim (–)
  2. Jim ( 1)
  3. Logan  ( 1)

Fantasy Football – Week 10

We had a big crowd at the house to watch the Seahawks take on the Giants. The Seahawks fought hard for the whole game and were finally able to coast at the end of a game. Beating the Giants isn’t a huge accomplishment, but it felt like a pretty solid win. That’s good because the upcoming schedule for the Seahawks is brutal. They play the Cardinals and the 49ers twice with the Chiefs, Eagles and Rams thrown in.

Last week Tim was telling me that he and Luke were going to have the lowest scores of the week. He ended up with the two top scoring players of the league (Rodgers and Lynch) and set a season record for most points in a game. Wow! Tim has a two game lead on second place. With only four games left in the regular season, I think he might clinch a playoff spot with another win. The rest of the spots are very much still up for grabs. Second through seventh are only separated by two games. Next week’s feature game is the battle for second place between Jim and Logan.

Logan continued his winning streak but lost the top spot in the power rankings to Tim. Jim held on to third place in this list despite my Hail Mary win on Monday night. If this was poker, you’d say I sucked out on the river.

  1. Tim ( 3)
  2. Logan ( 1)
  3. Jim (–)
  4. Ben ( 1)

The Seahawks played Eli this week so there were plenty of fantastic “Manning Faces.” It was hard to choose just one:

And we’ll end with two more stats from our league. The Yahoo record book only goes back to 2011, but according to them, no team has had an easier strength of schedule than Tim has had this year. And conversely, no team has had a harder strength of schedule than Dad has had this year. We’ll see if those numbers hold up through the end of the season.

Fantasy Football – Week 9

Ok, maybe I need to clarify this for the Seahawks. Last week I said they needed to play the first half of the game like they have been playing the second half. They played the first half quite well this week including a bunch of takeaways, but then seemed to almost give the game away in the second half. So here’s my new request: play a solid 60 minutes.

Logan has been talking big lately and he backed it up this week with the highest score in the league and knocking off Tim. Jim ended his big 5 game winning streak. Tim is still alone in first place with Jim and Logan following behind. And congrats to Dad and Andy who broke their season high four game losing streaks. We had lots of great coaching this week too. Logan and Andy started perfect rosters, while Dad and Austin came within a point or two of their perfect rosters.

We have 5 games left before the playoffs start and it seems like a good time to roll out a new section for the weekly update: power rankings! Yahoo has a power ranking but it’s based on projected scores and those are garbage so I made my own formula. I’ll only post the top four each week and in parentheses you’ll see the change from the previous week. Logan is coming on strong!

  1. Logan (up 3)
  2. Austin (down 1)
  3. Jim (down 1)
  4. Tim (down 1)

Fantasy Football – Week 8

The Seahawks finally won, but their first half still looked pretty bad. They picked it up towards the end of the game, but it was almost too late at that point. A win is a win. If they win the next 2-3 then I’ll start to feel a little better about their chances. The big concern for me right now is their turnover ratio. Last year they led the league with +22. This year they are a mediocre +4 and they are almost halfway through their schedule. That’s a huge change.

In our league, we had lot of very high scores. Logan and Austin both broke the record for most points in a week and we nearly had a new all-time blowout record. Jim is riding a 5 game winning streak but my eyes are on Austin. His low score over the last 4 weeks is 137. He’s the one to watch out for in my book… and lucky me, I play him this week.

Now on to the weekly awards. I’m going to start listing stats in bold when they represent new records.

Fantasy Football – Week 7

Yuck. I said the Seahawks wouldn’t make it to the Super Bowl. Now I’m just hoping they can make the playoffs. They got pushed around in the first half but had a better second half. That non-review call at the end of the game seems insane to me, but it still would have been a stretch to win from that point and they never should have been there in the first place. The fake punt was an incredibly gutsy call, and the misdirection on the punt return earlier in the game was one of the coolest special teams plays that I’ve seen in a long time. Too bad they were performed against the Seahawks and not BY the Seahawks.

Our league saw a bunch of low scores except for Tim and Austin who cranked out good performances. First, second and third place (Tim, Jim and Luke) are now pulling ahead of the rest of us who are fighting for the final playoff spot. Austin had the highest score for the second week in a row. He’s coming on strong. And despite owning the two highest scoring players in the league this week (Wilson and Manning), Andy had the lowest score for the second week in a row.

Now on to the weekly awards.

And hey, good news, only one more month of this ridiculously long annual streak of wearing pink.

Fantasy Football – Week 6

The Seahawks faltered again this week. In five games, they have yet to regain their dominance from last season. Forget about the Super Bowl repeat. Let’s make it through the first round of the playoffs. Here are some of the big changes I see from last season:

  • Opposing teams are getting too many yards of the catch. Last year, guys might catch a short pass but they’d be immediately met by the Legion of Boom to pay for their catch.
  • Where are the turnovers and the sacks? So many opposing red zone drives ended in interceptions last year that it was almost expected. This year the team is almost last in the league in sacks and turnovers.
  • People attending the games say it’s still loud, but have there been ANY false starts by the opposition in Seattle yet?
  • On the flip side, the Seahawks have a flood of pre-snap penalties.
  • The secondary is starting to look like Swiss cheese. They’re pulling up players from the practice squad just to field a complete team.
  • Last year, the Seahawks made a big improvement in their third down defense and it was a major factor in their championship run. This year they are 6th worst in the league.

Ok, enough moaning about a team that still has a 4-2 record. There was big news in our league: Tim lost! Jim finally beat him, but Tim still has sole possession of first place. Jim and Luke are tied for second, I’m in fourth and then everyone else is tied at 2-4 for fifth place. Our longest league winning and losing streaks were broken this week too.

Now on to the weekly awards.

Tony Romo was pretty happy for most of the game as he led his team to the win, but I had to chuckle at this screen grab. He’s got his hand in the air making a pistol motion presumably for an audible, but he already stamped his foot for the ball. What followed was reminiscent of Peyton Manning’s missed snap in the Super Bowl. Without plays like this and the blocked punt, the game would have been a blowout.

Fantasy Football – Week 5

The Seahawks came off their Monday Night east coast showdown with a win, but it wasn’t very pretty. They seemed to struggle against the injury-ridden Redskins. The Seahawks were their own worst enemy with 13 penalties for 90 yards, including three Percy Harvin touchdowns that all got called back for unrelated penalties. While I’d love to see the Seahawks win another Super Bowl, I don’t think they’re on that path right now. Last season they were unstoppable with endless interceptions. This year they look a lot more mortal. Only three teams in the league have fewer interceptions, seven have fewer sacks, and six have fewer fumbles forced. That’s a far cry from the dominating defense they had last year. In fairness that does include a bye week that most other teams haven’t had yet, but still…

What Seattle lacks in league dominance, Tim is showing in spades. He’s two games ahead of second place and has yet to lose a game. He has over 100 season points more than the average of the rest of the league. Jim and Luke are now tied for second with Jim having a very strong week (160 points.) The matchup to watch next week is #1 vs #2, Tim vs Jim… the battle of the “ims”.

The automated roster reminders seemed to work ok this week, or at least I didn’t get any complaints. Hopefully this is a handy tool to help us all keep our rosters full and healthy.

No “Manning-face” from the opposing QB for the Seahawks this week. Kirk Cousins did much better than people expected him to and had some incredible plays. I should have done this photo thing last year because there haven’t been many awesome defensive Seahawks games this year.
