Fantasy Football – Week 6

2016_week6_drewbreesThe Seahawks are 4-1 after and ugly win against Atlanta. The normally rock solid kicking game had a missed field goal and blocked extra point that nearly cost them the game. The big play of the game unfortunately came from the referees with a blown pass interference call at the end of the game that would have put the Falcons in field goal position. I love the Seahawks but that as a terrible no-call. Nevertheless, it’s a W in the books and that means that “Russell Wilson is 1 win away from his 50th career victory. With a win over the Falcons in his 69th career start, he would tie for the 3rd-fastest starting QB since 1970 to reach 50 career wins, behind only Ken Stabler (62 starts) and Tom Brady (65 starts).” (source)

Two of the highest scores in our league came from the 7th and 8th place teams (Dad and Jim) in their head to head battle. Luke’s team blew everyone away though with three players over 30 points! Logan looks dominant as he extended his winning streak to 4 games. And I don’t want to pick on Tim too much, but have we ever had a team that was in first place get the lowest score in the league two weeks in a row? If he keeps this up for a few more weeks, he’ll be down in the standings by me. Here’s what the Power Rankings have to say:

1. Logan
2. Andy
3. Austin
4. Dad (+2)

This Week Season All-Time
Highest Team Score Luke had 131.52 Logan had 170.69 (Week 5) Tim 200.51 (2015)
Lowest Team Score Tim had 77.09 Was: Jim had 77.82 (Week 2) Andy had 41.29 (2015)
Biggest Blowout Luke beat Tim by 54.43 Logan beat Tim by 79.46 (Week 5) Luke beat Andy by 113.02 (2010)
Closest Win Dad beat Jim by 7.77 Tim beat Dad by 0.45 (Week 4) Jim beat Ben by 0.12 (2012)
Highest Scoring Player Drew Brees had 40.60 on Austin’s bench Ben Roethlisberger had 43.90 for Andy (Week 4) Drew Brees had 60.54 on Tim’s bench (2015)
Longest Active Winning Streak Logan has a 4 game winning streak Tim had a 4 game winning streak (Week 4) Micah (2011) and Ben (2015) had an 8 game winning streak
Longest Active Losing Streak Jim has a 3 game losing streak. Dad had a 4 game losing streak (Week 5) Kyle had a 14 game losing streak (2011)

Fantasy Football – Week 5

2016_week5_roethlisbergerThe Seahawks had a bye this week, but I read a couple fun statistics that make me excited about the possibilities for this season:

  • The Seahawks now have played 77 straight games without losing by more than 10 points. That is now the longest streak in pro football history, as they passed the Decatur Staleys-turned-Chicago Staleys-turned Chicago Bears streak of 74 straight set from 1920 to 1925, per Pro-Football-Reference.com.
  • Since 2012, the Seahawks have allowed 106 touchdowns. The next closest team is the Bengals, who have allowed 143 during that stretch.

Tim’s undefeated streak was ended in our league in grand fashion. It was kind of reminiscent of the Hindenberg as Logan beat him by so mucch that we wondered about the toppling of the all-time record. Elsewhere in the league, Luke, Jim and Dad are still looking for win number two before their season is flushed like number two. Jim and Dad each other next week so one of them will find the endzone. Kudos to Jim though for starting the perfect roster this week!

With his big game, Logan jumps up to the top of the power rankings this week:

1. Logan (+2)
2. Andy (-1)
3. Austin (-1)
4. Ben

This Week Season All-Time
Highest Team Score Logan had 170.69 Was Andy had 154.21 (Week 4) Tim 200.51 (2015)
Lowest Team Score Tim had 92.19 Jim had 77.82 (Week 2) Andy had 41.29 (2015)
Biggest Blowout Logan beat Tim by 79.46 Was Austin beat Jim by 41.90 (Week 4) Luke beat Andy by 113.02 (2010)

Longest Active Losing Streak Dad has a 4 game losing streak Weekly streak is season record Kyle had a 14 game losing streak (2011)

Fantasy Football – Week 4

2016_week4_roethlisbergerSeahawks! That game felt great. Both the offense and the defense played good games and I didn’t see any major injuries. Jimmy Graham had another big day with some incredible catches. They get a very early bye week this year, but at least it means that Wilson will get a chance to rest… if he ever rests.

The game of the week in our league turned out to be Tim and Dad. They had the two lowest scores in the league by quite a bit and their game was decided by less than half a point thanks to Eli Manning’s poor performance and INT on Monday night. Tim’s undefeated streak continues. Barely.

We are four weeks into the season so that means that our custom power rankings are available. Here’s what we have right now:
1. Andy
2. Austin
3. Logan
4. Ben
I love these early season power rankings because they can vary so much from the current standings. For example, Tim is dominating our league but he is sixth in the power rankings. Is that the because the power ranking formula is wrong or because we just haven’t had enough games in our league for the wins and losses to match up to team strength?

We also broke almost every season record!

This Week Season All-Time
Highest Team Score Andy had 154.21 Was Logan had 153.13 (Week 1) Tim 200.51 (2015)
Lowest Team Score Dad had 82.28 Jim had 77.82 (Week 2) Andy had 41.29 (2015)
Biggest Blowout Austin beat Jim by 41.90 Was Andy beat Dad by 33.11 (Week 2) Luke beat Andy by 113.02 (2010)
Closest Win Tim beat Dad by 0.45 Was Logan beat Andy by 0.78 (Week 3) Jim beat Ben by 0.12 (2012)
Highest Scoring Player Ben Roethlisberger had 43.90 for Andy Was Andrew Luck had 43.50 for Jim (Week 1) Drew Brees had 60.54 on Tim’s bench (2015)
Longest Active Winning Streak Tim has a 4 game winning streak Weekly streak is season record Micah (2011) and Ben (2015) had an 8 game winning streak
Longest Active Losing Streak Dad has a 3 game losing streak Was Ben and Jim and 2 game losing streaks (Week 2) Kyle had a 14 game losing streak (2011)

Fantasy Football – Week 3

Broncos Bengals FootballThat Seahawks game was a lot easier to watch. Scoring a TD in the first minute on a 3 play 80-yard drive was comforting. Pretty much everything about the offense looked good. Christine Michael is getting good blocks up front and gaining huge yards and they finally realized that maybe they should pass to their expensive tight end. Graham ended up over 100 yards with a TD. It’s only the second game with the Seahawks where he has gone over 100 yards and this third TD as a Seahawk. More please. There was a definite damper on the excitement in the second half though with the horse collar tackle that took out Wilson’s knee. Thankfully the coaches were able to keep him out of the game. There was no point in him continuing to play at that point and it was a good opportunity to get Trevone Boykin some real snaps. He didn’t look bad except for the INT at the end of the game.

Our league had some Monday night drama. Logan needed 2.13 points on Monday night to win the game and he got… 2.90. Jim needed 39.05 points on Monday night to win and got 41.1. I’m sure Andy and Luke are a bit frustrated about those games. Tim remains undefeated and victories by Jim and myself mean that there are no winless (“unfeated”?) teams anymore. Bye weeks are starting so watch those rosters carefully.

On to the weekly stats:

This Week Season All-Time
Highest Team Score Tim had 132.25 Logan had 153.13 (Week 1) Tim 200.51 (2015)

Longest Active Losing Streak Dad has a 2 game losing streak Ben and Jim and 2 game losing streaks (Week 2) Kyle had a 14 game losing streak (2011)

Fantasy Football – Week 2

2016week2_camnewtonThat was not a great game for the Seahawks. Why are the Rams always so difficult for the Seahawks to beat? The defense was reasonably good (except for the notable lack of turnovers), but the offense was stagnant. Next up is the 49ers. They’re not going to lose to the 49ers… are they?

Andy and Tim are the only remaining undefeated coaches in our league. Jim and I are still waiting for our first win. This early in the season, it can help to look at the total points scored since those teams usually bubble up to the playoffs. That ranking would put Andy, Logan, and Austin on top. Andy and Logan face off next week so that should be a pretty good matchup.

This Week Season All-Time
Highest Team Score Andy had 128.47 Logan had 153.13 (Week 1) Tim 200.51 (2015)

Fantasy Football – Week 1

2016week1_andrewluckWhew. The Seahawks started off the season with a rough win. They were behind almost the entire game but finally put together a drive that culminated in a touchdown. That’s not what we’re used to seeing, especially at home and especially against the Miami Dolphins. Thankfully, a win is a win.

Our league had plenty of drama with a bunch of good games. When the dust settled, Tim, Andy, Dad and Logan had set sail on their undefeated season.

I’ll start the stats table off with some carryover stats from last season, but next week I’ll adjust that third column to be the current season.

This Week (Last) Season All-Time

Fantasy Football Pre Season

fantasyfootballIt’s almost time to start up the weekly fantasy football posts again! We had our draft on Friday so the teams are set. Yahoos super accurate, never incorrect stat predictions say that I’ll score the most points this season based on the people we drafted.

As a quick reminder, Austin won last year. Here were the full standings:

Austin
Logan
Ben
Dad
Luke
Andy
Tim
Jim

The first game of the season is September 8. Good luck everyone!

Fantasy Football Super Stats

fantasyfootballstatsI wrote a tool for our fantasy football league that checks the rosters twice a week and sends out emails if you having anyone starting a game who is injured, on a bye week, or just questionable. That, along with lots of effort from each coach, has made our league pretty good in terms of starting full rosters every week.

I started playing around more with the Yahoo API and realized that I could download stats for every game. Not just that, I could download stats for all nine seasons that we’ve had this league! Give a data scientist a fun data set like this and see what happens. None of the stuff I did is very complicated in terms of real “data science”, but it sure was fun!

First of all, I have some corrections to make to the table of records. One of these is due to a stat correction from Yahoo and the other is because Yahoo’s online interface didn’t let me go back far enough to see the old record. Here is the updated table with changes in bold. It turns out that Tim didn’t break the record for highest score in a game or the highest player score in a game.

This Week Season All-Time
Highest Team Score Ben had 151.18 Tim 200.51 (Week 3) Tim had 206.94 in 2008
Lowest Team Score Andy had 75.31 Andy had 41.29 (Week 14) Andy had 41.29 (2015)
Biggest Blowout Luke beat Andy by 42.02 Ben beat Dad by 111.43 (Week 8) Luke beat Andy by 113.02 (2010)
Closest Win Austin beat Logan by 16.44 Ben beat Andy by 2.46 (Week 7) Jim beat Ben by 0.12 (2012)
Highest Scoring Player Kirk Cousins had 40.20 as a free agent. Drew Brees had 58.30 on Tim’s bench (Week 8) Peyton Manning had 60.28 for Andy (2013)

Longest Active Losing Streak Jim has a 4 game losing streak. Andy had a 8 game losing streak (Week 14) Kyle had a 14 game losing streak (2011)

Ok, but that’s pretty boring. What else can we answer? How about who had the most points on their bench? Instead of just counting the total, let’s look at the percentage of the total team’s points that sat on the bench. This stat is mostly just a curiosity. You could have a lot of points on the bench because you started the wrong people or because your team was really strong.

Tim Scherschel 36.0%
Dallon Martens 32.4%
Ben Martens 32.3%
Logan Brandt 32.1%
League Total 31.7%
Luke 31.2%

Austin 30.0%
Andy Daniels 27.6%

Which positions produce the most average points in a game?

QB 22.3

Who has had the easiest schedule for the history of our league?
Tim. Dad has had the hardest schedule. But really, they are all very similar. Nobody deviated more than 2% from the mean.

Who had the most close wins in the last four years? This is a count of the number of times that each person won by less than 10 points.

Jim 8
Andy Daniels 8
Logan Brandt 7
Tim Scherschel 7
Dallon Martens 7
Austin 5
Ben Martens 5
Luke 5

There are so many more questions on my list to answer, but frankly I’ve been spending a lot of late nights digging through this. Hopefully if I get this post out, I’ll stop for a while and go to sleep!

If you’re interested in this dataset, let me know. I can either ship it to you in Excel or I can give you access to the SQL database and you can run your own queries. I hope to keep it running next year as the season progresses. I think I’ll also be able to use it to generate the Weekly Awards table each week which will make my blog posts easier.

Thanks to everyone for a great season! Go Seahawks!

Fantasy Football – Week 16

2015_week16_kirkcousinsLast week the Seahawks looked about like they did the first time they played the Rams. The offensive line was ineffective and they couldn’t get the offense into rhythm. I wonder how much of that has to do with using random running backs off the street. I hope for the sake of the playoffs that Lynch is able to come back, but next year, Rawls is the horse I’d bet on. I haven’t read all the outcomes of the playoff picture but I think this loss means that the Seahawks will probably have a pretty tough first round opponent. From a house party perspective, it would be fun to see a Seahawks Packers rematch since there are plenty of Packer fans in our group of friends around here.

In our league, the top combatants produced some underwhelming scores but the game was pretty tight. Austin edged out Logan for first place. Congrats Austin! This is the first time we’ve ever had a repeat champion. In both years, Austin got hot at the end of the season which means he knows how to make the right roster moves to keep his team healthy and in the hunt. Kudos! beat Dad for third place. Luke beat Andy for fifth, and Tim beat Jim for seventh. I’ll do another post in a week or two with some more stats from the season.

But for now… on to the weekly awards.

This Week Season All-Time
Highest Team Score Ben had 151.18 Tim 200.51 (Week 3) Tim 200.51 (2015)

Fantasy Football – Week 15

NFL: Carolina Panthers at New York GiantsJohnny Money actually played pretty well against the Seahawks. The defense was underwhelming for the first part of the game but they figured it out eventually. Kudos to the coaching staff for making changes throughout the game just like they have been throughout the season. The Seahawks have now clinched a playoff spot which I was betting against at the beginning of the season. If the season ended now, the Seahawks would play the Redskins in their first game. Any hope at a Super Bowl has to run through the Panthers, Cardinals and Packers. All of those would be a challenge at best. It sounds like Lynch has a chance to be back for the playoffs which would be important. I suspect those would be his final games as a Seahawk but we’ll see… I’m in favor of getting rid of his big salary (and his attitude) and betting on Rawls.

Our league broke my little heart. I fretted over my roster all week making some small adjustments. Everything went pretty well and I was only a couple points from a perfect roster but it wasn’t enough to topple the 91.16 points that Austin got from Cam Newton and Antonio Brown. Very impressive. Logan won his game so next week will feature Austin vs Logan for the championship. Austin wasn’t part of the money pool so Logan wins that already (for the second year in a row!)

I have to also point out that last week Logan and I swapped the spot for the top seed. That happened because of about a four point difference in his game. If that had gone the other way, Logan would have played Austin … and lost by 1 point. Ha! Ok ok, I’ll quit my moaning.

In other league news, this was tied the highest total points (sum of all teams) for the year. We had the same output in week 3. Andy broke his losing streak with a win over Tim and had his highest point total of the year.

The Power Rankings a little extra silly this time but here they are anyway:
1. Ben
2. Logan
3. Austin (+1)
4. Dad (-1)

If I had to put down money, I’d put it on Austin. He would have beat Logan 7 of the last 8 weeks and Logan has a lot of injury trouble. That being said, I think it’s going to be really close.

Now on to the weekly awards.
