Wellington

If you’ve read The White Cascade, you probably recognize Wellington as the sight of one of the greatest train disasters in history. In 1910, a couple train got stuck on the tracks by a huge snowstorm and was eventually taken out by an avalanche killing 96 people. It’s located in Stevens Pass and on Thursday, Mom, Dad and I headed there to check it out.

I tried to hike to Wellington on Father’s Day last year but got turned around by snow. This year we didn’t have any problems like that. We drove to the top of Stevens Pass, caught the north end of Old Cascade Highway south down the valley to the Wellington trailhead.

Unfortunately it was raining just hard enough to thwart our attempts at a good hike, but we hiked about a mile underneath a concrete snowshed and saw the entrance to the old Cascade train tunnel.

Since our train adventure ended a bit early, we headed on to Leavenworth. After a quick stop to walk through the shops and get some fudge, we drove south and did the three pass blast in the Subie (Stevens, Blewett, Snoqualmie.)

Moran State Park Camping Trip

Every year around December, we check out the Washington State Parks website and see which campgrounds are filling up. There are usually some good campsites left at those parks and we snag one for the following year. Previous trips have been to Deception Pass and Fort Flagler. This year it was Moran State Park on Orcas Island.

The first challenge was getting everyone to the campsite. Tim, Andy and I headed up on Thursday afternoon after leaving work a little early. It’s a 70 minute ferry ride and there are not a lot of ferries each day. We eventually made it to Orcas a little after dark, found dinner at a bar in Eastsound and then made our way to the campground.

Our campsite was perched up on a cliff overlooking Cascade Lake. The site had a nice view but there weren’t any level spots to set the tents which made sleeping interesting.

On Friday, Tim, Andy and I hiked with Tucker around Cascade Lake and Mountain Lake, drank some beverages and played cards. Matt and Laura arrived just after dark, and Tyla and Chelsea arrived after 11. Tim and I were getting a bit nervous that they may have gotten lost, and with no cell reception at the camp site, we headed out to track them down. Thankfully we spotted them on their way to the site so we flipped a u-turn and led them to the campsite.

Saturday was a full day of hiking to the top of Mt. Constitution (the highest point in the San Juans), bumbling about in rented row boats, and playing cornhole.

Sunday morning came too soon and we had to pack up to leave. Thankfully we got on an even earlier ferry than we had planned (it was late because of fog) and we made good time coming home.

It would have been nice if the whole group could have been there longer, but I’m really happy that we got to go. I wouldn’t stay in that same site again. There are a ton of good ones to choose from though and the park is gorgeous. Thanks to everyone who came!

Oregon Trail

Tyla and I spent Memorial Day weekend camping in Garibaldi, OR with her family. They headed down earlier in the week, but we didn’t leave until Saturday morning in hopes of avoiding some traffic. We met them in chilly Cannon Beach where the wind and cool temps made for a short walk on the beach. Oskar enjoyed the ocean, we had some lunch in town, and then we visited a few shops before heading out.

The whole weekend was full of laughter, campfire, beaches, great views, cornhole, and delicious food. Tyla’s dad is a dutch oven genius… and I’m not talking about farting under the covers… but maybe that applies too. I wouldn’t know. The highlights included a quick hike Saturday morning and a ride on an authentic steam engine to nowhere. I may have taken a few years off my life by inhaling the steam and oil combo but it was a fun trip. We, of course, introduced the family to cornhole and I think it was a big hit.

We left early Monday morning to avoid the crazy traffic, but on the way out, we stopped at the Tillamook cheese and ice cream factory to pick up some cheese curds (Tyla’s favorite.) We hit the beginnings of the big traffic jams but still made pretty good time.

The weather was a bit iffy on Saturday, but Sunday and Monday were gorgeous. The four of them slept in the trailer while I was out in the doghouse tent. It can’t really be called the doghouse since the dog slept in the trailer too. I was happy to try out my fancy new Marmot sleeping bag. Even though the temps dipped down to around 40 degrees at night, I was very comfortable. It was a good purchase.

All in all it was a great weekend. Thanks to the whole family for letting me tag along!

Whistler in the Summer

Mom, Dad and I spent the weekend in Whistler. I wasn't sure what to expect there in the summer, but it was a blast. The weather was a bit foggy the first day but it didn't deter us much. The second day was full of sunshine and we had some great views. And we got actual snowfall at the peak on both days (no accumulation though.)

The main events on our trip were hiking down Harmony Ridge past Harmony Lake, the zip lining 100 feet above Fitzsimmons Creek, and hiking the new High Note trail around the south side of Whistler Peak. Oh and of course we ate some great food and found things to buy in the village.

This was the first time I stayed in the Windwhistle Condos (#402), but it won't be the last. It's located right in the village above the Whistler Grocery Store (near Citta's Bistro and the Amsterdam Cafe.) That condo could sleep six and has two separate decks overlooking the mountains. You can find the info on alluradirect.com if you're interested.

Plenty of pictures have been posted in the photo gallery. You can also click on the panorama below for the full size version. And finally, I have embedded a video of one of Mom's zip line runs.

Ocean Shores State Park

Chelsea, Tim and I headed for Ocean Shores State Park this weekend for what is likely the last camping trip of the year. We set up late on Friday night and had a quick campfire before bed. Saturday morning we walked on the beach and then spent the afternoon riding mopeds. In Washington, the beach is a highway so there are cars out on the hardpacked sand (and stuck in the not so hard sand.) You can ride mopeds out there as well so we took full advantage of the opportunity. On Saturday night, we were joined by Cheryl, Joe, and Lisa. After a second chilly night, we woke up on Sunday for an hour long horse ride on the beach.

It was an action packed weekend, but the weather cooperated and I think we all had a great time. Pictures are posted in the gallery.

Ticawa Recap

Whew… that was a long trip. It was two layovers and both ways because I'm too cheap to pay extra for better plane tickets. I was up for almost 24 hours on Sunday because of my early flight coupled with the time change.

But you know what? I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

The weather couldn't have been much better. We had sun just about every day and it got quite warm on the weekend. Saturday night we had a great light show as some strong thunderstorms rolled through.

Activities included taking the boat through the Songo River Locks and into Sebago Lake, golfing, skiing, a water balloon slingshot, tons of great food, a mystery puma stalking Lauren and Andy's window, Market Basket pizza, and miscellaneous relaxation. My camera stayed in my room most of the weekend but I did snap a few pics. The first 20 pictures in the Camp Ticawa gallery are new.

Once again, a huge thanks to the Abendroths for letting me crash their family vacation. I'd love to come back for the 50th anniversary of camp so please keep me in the loop!

Deception Pass

We're back from the big camping trip, and I happily declare it a success. There were some doubts about the weather, but the worst we got were a few sprinkles here and there. Thankfully Tim bought one of those tents that goes over the picnic table and that really saved the day. It kept stuff from falling on the table and gave us a respite from the rain when we needed it. Our days were filled with walks on the beach, a catamaran boat trip, a Flexi-straw challenge, and general laziness around camp fires.

I've been told that I don't post enough pictures, so this time I posted around 70. That's about 20% of the photos that were taken. Between Chelsea and I, I don't think anything was left undocumented.  It's a beautiful area. You'll need to book early to get a camp site, but it's worth the effort if you get a chance. Try to snag site #30. We had complete privacy. Nobody could see us while we sat around the campfire.

We also took a bit of video which again seems little a good match for stuff you find on YouTube. There's no editing or anything like that, but it might make you chuckle.

I walked around the campsites and saw license plates from all over the United States. When I was at Mt. St. Helens, I listened to the crowd shout out where they were from, "New York! Japan! Texas!" It makes me smile to know that I only had to drive an hour or two to get to these places.

Ben Vs. Wild

Today a plan hatched in January comes to fruition. Seven month ago, we made reservations for the oh-so-popular Deception Pass State Park campground. This place fills up faster than a Bon Jovi concert in Atlantic City. The park is located in Puget Sound about 10 miles south of Anacortes. Translation: gorgeous.

We might have a few showers to contend with, but after surviving the monsoon camping trip, I'm not too worried. When it's not raining we'll be playing cornhole, watching Tim play with the fire, and inspecting the quality of some adult beverages. I'm really looking forward to this trip. We start today and don't come back until Monday so that will give us two full days on the site.

Have a good weekend!

I Conquered Gravity

On Saturday, Tim and I hiked up to the top of Tiger Mountain along the West Tiger #3 trail. I’ve read about it online and it’s often mentioned as one of the most popular hikes in the area. Tiger is the mountain (large hill) that stares you in the face as you get off of I-90 on exits 17 or 18 and when you leave my house and head down Trossachs Blvd. There are over 80 miles of trails on Tiger Mountain, but the trail we hiked was 2.5 miles and 2000 vertical feet one way.

As we started the hike, my macho goal was to not suggest any breaks and wait for Tim to get tired first. That lasted for about 5 minutes. I’m really out of shape after being on the doctor-ordered rest for 3+ months. It took us an hour and fifteen minutes to get to the top and forty five minutes to get down. We’ll see how much that time improves by the end of the summer.

Oh and this magnificent hiking is less than 15 minutes from my house. It’s just one of the many reasons I’m happy I live “way out there.”

Penrose Point Recap

Tim, Chelsea and I headed for Penrose Point State Park on Friday. It rained most of the day but stopped before we arrived at the site. We had just enough light to set up the tents before spending the rest of the night around the campfire. Saturday was full of cornhole, hiking, and sleeping. We packed up on Sunday morning and headed home. The weather was 75-80 and sunny all weekend.

It was a quick trip, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Expect to see more camping reports throughout the summer.

Pictures are posted in the gallery. I'll add more from Tim and Chelsea in a day or two.
